Latvian Qualifications Framework (LQF) has 8 levels (1 – the lowest, 8 – the highest).

Levels reflect the complexity level of acquired knowledge, skills and competences (learning outcomes).

LQF covers stages of education starting from the basic education (level 1 – special basic education) to the highest education (level 8 – doctoral studies).

Level of professional qualification
Latvia has a system of five professional qualifications levels (PQL, 1 – the lowest, 5 – the highest).

PQL system covers only professional qualifications (basic education, secondary and higher education stages).

PQL reflects readiness of a person to perform work of certain stage of complexity and responsibility.

Learning outcomes

Learning outcomes are knowledge, skills and competences acquired during a certain period of learning.

In Latvia, learning outcomes are stipulated by state education standards and occupational standards (for the professional qualifications).

Learning outcomes of higher education are defined by higher education institutions.

  • Skills

    1. To understand the drawings of furniture constructions and other wooden articles.
    2. To carry out the detailing of wooden articles, to make specification.
    3. To prepare the sketch of the article.
    4. To produce furniture of massive wood and particle boards of different construction and the decorative elements of this furniture.
    5. To produce elements of simple upholstered furniture and other articles.
    6. To carry out the works of furniture and other wooden article repair and renovation.
    7. To choose assembling methods and carry out assembling works including  works in facilities.
    8. To carry out work of gluing and veneering by using different glues and gluing devices; to determine the quality of gluing connections;
    9. To choose materials for the work and to use them rationally.
    10. To process wood with tools and hand-held power tools.
    11. To prepare equipment, instruments, ancillary devices for the work and to test their compatibility with the requirements of work and environmental protection.
    12. To carry out the mechanical wood processing works with working machines (tilting arbor saws, band saw machines, bed-type millers, milling machines, drilling machines, drilling – blistering machines, bench grinders, turning and other working machines).
    13. To carry out the preparation works which are related to exploitation of machine tools and equipment (to choose appropriate cutting tools, to assess the quality of cutting instruments, to maintain and store the cutting tools, to maintain the wood processing machines, to set the cutting tools, to install and regulate the protective, ancillary devices or other technological equipment).
    14. To carry out the chemical protection of the articles and finishing of furniture with hand tools (brusges, rolls) and sprinkling method.
    15. To work in a work team, to schedule the work of your own and the work group.
    16. To manage the work schedule and work organization.
    17. To make calculations of the articles.
    18. To cooperate with the customer.
    19. To organize the working place and carry out the works according to the requirements of work protection, electrical safety, fire protection and environmental protection.
    20. To carry out the measures of first aid in case of accidents.
    21. To be able to use the official language.
    22. To use one foreign language at a communication level.
    23. To use the professional terminology in the official language and in one foreign language.

  • Competences/ autonomy

    1. Ability to accept and assess raw materials and materials – to assess the compatibility of the raw materials and materials to the producing of the article.
    2. Ability to distribute the sketch of the article by its oral description.
    3. Ability to read and understand the technical documentation, drawings, technological maps, instructions and other work documentation, to use the information obtained during the work process.
    4. Ability to carry out the works of wood and material gluing, veneering and component slating.
    5. Ability to correctly choose the necessary position type machine tools, to work with the combined and universal working machines.
    6. Ability to make, assemble and install furniture of different type and construction and other wooden articles in the object (furniture of massive wood and particle board, carcass and soft furniture) as well as to carry out fixing and renovating works of simple furniture.
    7. Ability to carry out the maintenance of woodworking machines and technological lines.
    8. Ability to carry out the finishing of wooden articles by correctly choosing the necessary instruments of finishing and renovation works.
    9. Ability to make decorative elements of furniture by choosing appropriate instruments.
    10. Ability to work with control and measuring instruments, to determine the compatibility of the raw material, finished production and package with the quality and technical requirements.
    11. Ability to store and analyze the information about the work of the technological line of individual machines to discover and eliminate irregularities in the technological process on time, to not allow the output of non-quality production, to creatively solve the problems.
    12. Ability to know and be able to use the work protection requirements, to follow the requirements of electrical safety, fire protection in the work place and to use safe working methods when working near to the woodworking machines or technological lines.
    13. Ability to respect the requirements of environment protection.
    14. Ability to work with different load lifting and transporting devices by working with technological lines or machine tools.
    15. Ability to document the produced goods and carry out the preparation of the produced goods for transporting to the customers or storing in a warehouse.
    16. Ability to communicate in the official language and one foreign language.

Qualifications can be acquired in the framework of education programs or in the evaluation and recognition of non-formal knowledge, skills and competences acquired (in vocational education LKI Levels 2-4).
