LQF covers stages of education starting from the basic education (level 1 – special basic education) to the highest education (level 8 – doctoral studies).

Learning outcomes are knowledge, skills and competences acquired during a certain period of learning.
In Latvia, learning outcomes are stipulated by state education standards and occupational standards (for the professional qualifications).
Learning outcomes of higher education are defined by higher education institutions.
– to acquire theoretical knowledge, skills and competence in linguistics, applied linguistics and business studies; to gain knowledge of the culture of modern language-speaking countries; to gain knowledge of research methods in linguistics and to acquire skills to use it by developing and defending the Bachelor Paper in applied linguistics.
The goal of the BSP “Modern Language and Business Studies” is:
– to prepare competent and competitive, suitable for bachelor’s level, staff members for state institutions and private companies, employees who understand the business environment and can apply and integrate the obtained language, culture and business knowledge and skills working in local and international enterprises; to prepare for continuing studies in master’s programmes.
The objectives of the BSP “Modern Language and Business Studies” are:
– to provide qualitative up-to-date modern language and business studies to prepare students for successful competition in the labour market,
– to encourage students to acquire skills required by the labour market nowadays – team work, research and practical work skills, the ability to think critically and to analyse problems, to take responsibility, interaction skills, entrepreneurial skills a.o.,
– to provide students with comprehensive knowledge and understanding of the role of a language in business, about business in different cultures, about functioning of the economic system,
– to ensure that the obtained knowledge allows understanding and further analysis of the place of an enterprise in the international business environment,
– to develop basic research skills, general and field specific competence that are significant in research and to apply these skills to research work required at the bachelor’s level,
– to develop practical skills and competence, based on theoretical knowledge, to prepare students to become employers in the future and to teach to react flexibly to the labour market demands,
– to provide obtaining a bachelor’s degree as provided by the Higher Education Law, to enhance the development of students’ creativity and to promote the most capable students to continue their studies in the master’s programmes.
Knowledge:
– understanding the most important notions and regularities in linguistic theories, economics and management; knowledge about the use of English in business;
– language knowledge in one of the chosen modern languages and basic knowledge of the third foreign language;
– understanding of the reasons and consequences of the actions of economic subjects in economy, about the essence of marketing, business environment and commercial activities in enterprises;
– knowledge about entrepreneurship in the European Union; knowledge about academic ethics;
Ability to apply knowledge:
Students are able:
– to analyse and synthesise literature sources to argument their ideas; to critically assess the relation of theory and practice and their significance;
– to improve their knowledge and skills and include in lifelong education processes thus facilitating their development;
– to develop a career in state and private organizations or to start and develop their own companies; to continue their education at the master’s level programmes.
Skills:
Students: have improved their learning skills;
– have a command of academic and business writing and communication skills in two modern languages; are familiar with information search, analysis and synthesis techniques, have developed argumentation and persuasion techniques and strategies, based on the culture, history and political peculiarities of the target country and are able to explain their arguments in a perceivable form for the audience, both in spoken and written form;
– have developed the third foreign language (German, Spanish, French, Italian, Swedish) skills that allow communicating as required by the verbal and non-verbal communication norms of the target culture;
– have obtained skills to analyse and evaluate modern tendencies in the world economics during globalisation; have obtained basic professional skills in translation, learning and teaching methods of business language;
– have developed skills to work with latest technologies and apply them according to the context; have acquired skills to get orientated in financial issues and their solutions in Latvia, to make the appropriate choice in the goods and labour market;
– are able to analyse and characterise management processes in economy, enterprises and institutions, to define managerial problems, to analyse and resolve them, based on the theoretical statements and international experience;
Competence:
Students:
– can apply their knowledge, understanding and problem solution skills to new or unknown situations in wider and interdisciplinary contexts related to the studied fields;
– can accept initiative and responsibility when performing tasks individually or in a team; to motivate other people for effective work;
– can work in big and small groups, organise work and assess performance; can participate in public discussions; can work in an international context; have an understanding about the role of humanism, tolerance and business ethics in intercultural communication.
