To acquire theory of nursing, which ensures proper understanding of nurse’s practice;
– to complement theoretical and clinical knowledge of nurses in the area of patients’ care;
– to master basics of patients’ care management and organization in line with principles of ethics and jurisdiction;
– to study courses of psychology and pedagogy necessary for educational work of patients and nurses;
– to carry out an independent study (12 credit points) in the selected speciality and present the results in a Bachelor’s thesis;
– to acquire the theoretical and practical knowledge and skills in the specialty – ambulatory care nurse: providing outpatient care and home care and health promotion (26 credit points);
– to acquire the theoretical and practical knowledge and skills in the specialty – anaesthesia, intensive care and emergency nurse: providing care for anaesthesiology, intensive therapy, emergency care (26 credit points);
– to acquire the theoretical and practical knowledge and skills in the specialty – children’s care nurse: all ages of child care in the health disorders and child health promotion (26 credit points);
– to acquire the theoretical and practical knowledge and skills in the specialty – operating nurse: preparation for surgery patients and providing care during surgery, operating room, instruments, equipment and material for preparation of operations, instrumentation of operation (26 credit points);
– to acquire the theoretical and practical knowledge and skills in the specialty – internal care nurse: providing care for patients with internal medicine and infectious diseases and health promotion (26 credit points);
– to acquire the theoretical and practical knowledge and skills in the specialty – surgical care nurse: providing care for patients with acute and chronic surgical diseases and health promotion (26 credit points);
– to acquire the theoretical and practical knowledge and skills in the specialty – mental health care nurse : providing care for patients with various mental disorders and diseases and health promotion (26 credit points).

The goal of the programme is to provide a professional education for the “Nursing” program by developing students’ analytic abilities and scientific research skills, evaluating their critical theoretical and practical knowledge, and by fostering professional growth, intellectual potential and nursing research.

Objectives:
– to develop philosophical thinking and research, view developments from different viewpoints, evaluate the content of knowledge and develop the ability to express an opinion based on data from nursing research;
– to analyse changes in health care in Latvian society and to prepare professional nurses able to work in various fields of medicine;
– to present information about employment and business in the health care system, and nursing organization and management;
– to pedagogically educate care givers about the promotion and maintenance of public, family and individual health;
– to develop the ability to establish and promote patient cooperation during treatment and evaluate and document the patient’s knowledge, understanding,
– ability and participation in measures needed to promote and maintain health;
– to improve knowledge about the development, characteristics and pedagogical psychology of aging;
– to develop the specific skills and proficiencies for general nursing.

Knowledge:
– in depth knowledge of the history of nursing theory, the development of theory and analysis, and the philosophy of nursing;
– in depth knowledge of health care management and organization, public and individual health care and maintenance education;
– an understanding of research methods and the organization and implementation of research; knowledge of record keeping, economics, and law;
– in depth knowledge of the student’s chosen field of specialty.

Skills:
– to apply theoretical and practical knowledge to issues faced in nursing, analysis, evaluation and determining treatment;
– to manage and organize the health care process and associated practical activities;
– to conduct health care research and apply the results of that research as well as the research of others in practice;
– to educate society and individuals on health care and maintenance issues;
– the ability to plan work within the health care framework;
– the ability to practice nursing.

Competence:
– the ability to express an opinion based on data from nursing research;
– the ability to work in the health care system;
– the ability to organize and manage the work of nurses; the ability to ensure respect for legal standards;
– the ability to use medical terminology in the state language as well as in at least two foreign languages;
– the ability to use specific skills in nursing.
