Level of professional qualification
Latvia has a system of five professional qualifications levels (PQL, 1 – the lowest, 5 – the highest).

PQL system covers only professional qualifications (basic education, secondary and higher education stages).

PQL reflects readiness of a person to perform work of certain stage of complexity and responsibility.

Learning outcomes

Learning outcomes are knowledge, skills and competences acquired during a certain period of learning.

In Latvia, learning outcomes are stipulated by state education standards and occupational standards (for the professional qualifications).

Learning outcomes of higher education are defined by higher education institutions.

The goal of the “Conference Interpreting” programme is to prepare highly qualified conference interpreters for the European Union and Latvian labour market. They should know at least two passive foreign languages, or one active foreign language.

They are able to interpret either from English and German or French into Latvian and from Latvian into English or German or French. They are competitive, proficient in terminology and can work in the EU institutions, international organizations, Latvian state and private enterprises.

The result of the studies is a highly qualified conference interpreter with profound general knowledge and proficiency in terminology, who can interpret speeches of various complexity at least from one of the main working languages of the EU (English, German, French) into Latvian and in the opposite direction (retour); or from two main working languages into Latvian, as well as:
has acquired theoretical, terminological and stylistic aspects of interpreting,
has excellent command of Latvian, can vary styles and registers,
can create new terms in Latvian,
can be flexible with the booth-mates,
can find the necessary information sources and knows methods of information elicitation.

 

Interpreter

  • Knowledge

    1. Basic knowledge of:
    1.1. interpreting theories.
    1.2. information management;
    1.3. communication psychology;
    1.4. knowledge about economic, political, social, cultural etc. processes.
    2. Understanding of:
    2.1. translation science and translation methodology;  
    2.2. business linguistics;
    2.3. different field terminology in the official language and at least two foreign languages;
    2.4. intercultural communication;
    2.5. business basics.
    3. Ability to apply knowledge of:
    3.1. the official language (if it is not one of the work languages);
    3.2. work languages (native and at least two foreign languages);
    3.3. translation tools in synchronous translation process;
    3.4. quality management;
    3.5. research work methodology;
    3.6. professional ethics and generally accepted moral norms;
    3.7. information technologies;
    3.8. environmental protection;
    3.9. labor protection;
    3.10. employment relationship.

  • Skills

    1. To understand strategical and analytical problems in the translation field, to find solutions.
    2. To use translation science opinions in the translation analysis and problem solving.
    3. To have a good knowledge of the principles of use of simultaneous translation techniques.
    4. To have a good knowledge of and use modern translation methods.
    5. To have a good knowledge of and use note technique in the sequential (consecutive) translation.
    6. To be able to obtain and evaluate information necessary for translation work by using information technologies.
    7. To have a good knowledge of the official language.
    8. To have a good knowledge of at least two foreign languages.
    9. To use professional terminology in the official language and at least one foreign language.
    10. To improve communication skills, to develop the culture of listener, speaker, writer, reader and to improve oneself as multilingual person.
    11. To respect the principles of professional ethics and culture of communication.
    12. To comply with labor safety, fire safety and environmental protection requirements.
    13. To meet the requirements of employment relationship.
    14. To perform scientific and research work, and to put the research results into practice.

  • Competences/ autonomy

    1. Ability to translate different texts from one or several foreign languages into native language and opposite, also from one foreign language to another;2. Ability to translate sequentially (consecutively) at the conferences, meetings and consultations by using note method, to translate simultaneously by using translation tools and to perform whispered translation.
    3. Ability to speak out and formulate thoughts clearly and understandably, to be able to evaluate, analyse and synthesize critically.
    4. Ability to analyse, evaluate and use researches and the latest technologies in the translation field.
    5. Ability to use translation methods according to customer’s requirements and target audience needs.
    6. Ability to provide  accuracy, stylistic and communicative compliance of the translation with the original, use of appropriate terminology.
    7. Ability to articulate sounds in the right and clear manner, to reproduce the logical sentence structure in the translation with correct intonation.
    8. Ability to choose and evaluate lexicographical resources to maintain qualitative translation.
    9. Ability to adapt to conditions and overcome stress situations.
    10. Ability to justify and protect own choice of translation solutions.
    11. Ability to cooperate with people in a kind and business-like manner, including to comply with general rules of conduct and professional ethics.
    12. Ability to improve translation (work) language skills according to developments in the countries where these languages are spoken.
    13. Ability to follow-up the latest translation science and practical translation opinions.
    14. Ability to adapt to changeable translation market conditions by following its development trends.
    15. Ability to utilize information technologies in one’s work.
    16. Ability to orientate and expand knowledge about social, economic, political, cultural etc. processes.
    17. Ability to comply with occupational safety, fire safety and environmental safety requirements.
    18. Ability to meet the requirements of employment relationship.
    19. Ability to communicate in the official language and at least two foreign languages.
    20. Ability to perform scientific research and draw it up according to guidelines for writing of scientific works.

Qualification acquisition requirements

Previous education
Higher education qualification of LQF level 6 (bachelor, professional bachelor or professional higher education qualification) in the same or compatible branch of science or professional field of higher education, as well as a certain professional experience laid down by higher education institution
Ways to acquire 
Qualifications can be acquired in the framework of education programs or in the evaluation and recognition of non-formal knowledge, skills and competences acquired (in vocational education LKI Levels 2-4).

ECTS credit points 
The unit of the volume of Latvian higher education studies - 1 credit point corresponds to one week of study work in full-time studies (40 credit points per study year).

1 The credit point of Latvia corresponds to 1,5 ECTS (European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System) credit point.
