Levels reflect the complexity level of acquired knowledge, skills and competences (learning outcomes).

LQF covers stages of education starting from the basic education (level 1 – special basic education) to the highest education (level 8 – doctoral studies).

Level of professional qualification
Latvia has a system of five professional qualifications levels (PQL, 1 – the lowest, 5 – the highest).

PQL system covers only professional qualifications (basic education, secondary and higher education stages).

PQL reflects readiness of a person to perform work of certain stage of complexity and responsibility.

Learning outcomes

Learning outcomes are knowledge, skills and competences acquired during a certain period of learning.

In Latvia, learning outcomes are stipulated by state education standards and occupational standards (for the professional qualifications).

Learning outcomes of higher education are defined by higher education institutions.

– to master the concepts of translation studies and to acquire the skills of different text type translation;
– to perfect one’s native language skills;
– to acquire the terminography skills in translation profession;
– to complete practice of translation under the guidance of an experienced translator and an internship at a translation agency, public or private institution (39 ECTS);
– to write MA Paper about issues of translation (30 ECTS) ;
– to learn and apply the standards of profession and professional ethics.

The goal of the master’s programme in translation is to train highly qualified translators that will be experts in establishing intercultural communication, will professionally meet current market demands and will be able to adapt to the future needs of the translation market.

Results:
Holders of master’s degrees will have a high level of competence in translating various types of texts either from two foreign languages (passive), or from one foreign language (active) and from Latvian into the active foreign language in various areas such as economics, law, the natural sciences, the social sciences and electronic media.

They will acquire the skills to edit and format texts for the needs of public and private institutions at the national and international levels, will be trained for work with terminology and computer-aided translation.

They will have high competence in translation theory that will help them to form their own understanding of theoretical principles and apply them to their work as professional translators.

 

Translator

  • Knowledge

    1. Basic knowledge of:
    1.1. translation theories;
    1.2. information management;
    1.3. communication psychology;
    1.4. basic knowledge of politics, economics, social and cultural processes.
    2. Understanding of:
    2.1. translation study and translation methodology;
    2.2. business linguistics;
    2.3. professional terminology in the official language and at least two foreign languages;
    2.4. intercultural communication;
    2.5. business basics.
    3. Ability to apply knowledge of:
    3.1. work languages (at least two foreign languages);
    3.2. computer skills, translation software in translation process;
    3.3. knowledge of quality management;
    3.4. research methodology;
    3.5. official language;
    3.6. environmental protection;
    3.7. labor protection;
    3.8. employment relationship;
    3.9. professional ethics and generally accepted moral norms;
    3.10. basics of records management.

  • Skills

    1. To evaluate compliance of one’s professional skills and abilities with profession’s standards and international market requirements.
    2. To understand strategical and analytical problems in the translation field, as well as to find solutions.
    3. To use translation study opinions in the translation analysis and problem solving.
    4. To have a good knowledge of and use modern translation methods.
    5. To use modern translation technologies.
    6. To maintain and evaluate information necessary for translation work by using information technologies.
    7. To draw up the translated text according to requirements of the laws and regulations of record-keeping.
    8. To orientate and be able to supplement knowledge regarding economic, political, social and cultural processes.
    9. To improve one’s communicative competence, to develop the culture of listener, speaker, writer, reader and to improve oneself as a multilingual person.
    10. To comply with translator’s professional ethics code of conduct, to observe confidentiality of the translated text.
    11. To know the official language.
    12. To know at least two foreign languages.
    13. To use professional terminology of the respective field of the translatable text in the official language and at least two foreign languages.
    14. To meet the requirements of employment relationship.
    15. To conduct scientific research and implement research results into practice.
    16. To comply with labor safety, fire safety and environmental protection requirements.

  • Competences/ autonomy

    1. Ability to translate from one foreign language into native language business texts, business correspondence, company’s documentation, technical, medical, marketing etc. texts, for example, legal.
    2. Ability to analyse, evaluate and use studies and the latest technologies in the translation field.
    3. Ability to identify the type of the text to be translated, to use translation methods according to the customer’s requirements and target audience needs.
    4. Ability to provide  accuracy, stylistic and communicative compliance of the translation with original, use of appropriate terminology.
    5. Ability to choose and evaluate lexicographical resources to perform qualitative translation.
    6. Ability to design the translated text according to requirements of the laws and regulations of record-keeping. .
    7. Ability to define text translation problems independently and to provide solutions.
    8. Ability to justify and protect one’s own choice of translation solutions.
    9. Ability to search and process the necessary information by using information technologies.
    10. Ability to solve actual terminology problems in the target language.
    11. Ability to understand the sequence and rational organization of interrelated work process parts.
    12. Ability to improve work language skills according to language developments in the countries where these languages are spoken.
    13. Ability to follow-up the latest opinions in the translation study and practical translation.
    14. Ability to adapt to changeable translation market conditions by following up its development trends.
    15. Ability to orientate and expand knowledge about economic, political, social and cultural processes.
    16. Ability to perform researches with scientific value in the translation study and to formalize them according to research work requirements, as well as to present maintained results.
    17. Ability to ensure compliance with the requirements of labor protection, fire safety and environmental protection.
    18. Ability to meet the requirements of employment relationship.
    19. Ability to communicate in the official language and at least two foreign languages.
    20. Ability to observe and provide compliance with professional ethics and generally accepted norms of behaviour.

Qualification acquisition requirements

Previous education
Higher education qualification of LQF level 6 (bachelor, professional bachelor or professional higher education qualification) in the same or compatible branch of science or professional field of higher education, as well as a certain professional experience laid down by higher education institution
Ways to acquire 
Qualifications can be acquired in the framework of education programs or in the evaluation and recognition of non-formal knowledge, skills and competences acquired (in vocational education LKI Levels 2-4).

ECTS credit points 
The unit of the volume of Latvian higher education studies - 1 credit point corresponds to one week of study work in full-time studies (40 credit points per study year).

1 The credit point of Latvia corresponds to 1,5 ECTS (European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System) credit point.
