Latvian Qualifications Framework (LQF) has 8 levels (1 – the lowest, 8 – the highest).

Levels reflect the complexity level of acquired knowledge, skills and competences (learning outcomes).

LQF covers stages of education starting from the basic education (level 1 – special basic education) to the highest education (level 8 – doctoral studies).

Level of professional qualification
Till 1 august 2022 in Latvia had a system of five professional qualifications levels (PQL, 1 – the lowest, 5 – the highest).

PQL system covers only professional qualifications (basic education, secondary and higher education stages).

PQL reflects readiness of a person to perform work of certain stage of complexity and responsibility.

Learning outcomes

Learning outcomes are knowledge, skills and competences acquired during a certain period of learning.

In Latvia, learning outcomes are stipulated by state education standards and occupational standards (for the professional qualifications).

Learning outcomes of higher education are defined by higher education institutions.

  • Skills

    1. To conduct examination/evaluation of a client/patient within one’s competence: systematically review and analyse the client’s/patient’s issues, difficulties, situation, personality.
    2. To evaluate a client’s/patient’s capabilities and resources that can be used in art therapy.
    3. To assess a client’s/patient’s environmental factors, cultural and social characteristics.
    4. To recognize a client’s/patient’s personality traits and behavioural manifestations of mental states.
    5. To define appropriate art therapy goals and objectives according to examination/evaluation results and implement them.
    6. To collaborate with a client/patient in setting and achieving art therapy goals.
    7. To select one or more theoretical concepts, according to which the art treatment plan shall be developed.
    8. To select and use appropriate art therapy methods and techniques according to specialization thereof and one’s professional scope of activity.
    9. To develop and implement an art treatment plan with respect to patient/client problems and resources.
    10. To select and use appropriate ways of interacting and techniques to work with clients and patients of various ages and social groups, their families and other parties involved in art therapy.
    11. To assess the results of art therapy.
    12. To discuss and explain to a client or patient and their families or carers the process of art therapy, results and impact thereof on health.
    13. To collaborate with other specialists within the scope of multidisciplinary or interdisciplinary team work in order to effectively help a client or patient.
    14. To inform and explain to the public the process, goals and objectives of art therapy, its possibilities and constraints, principles of professional ethics.
    15. To adhere to the principles of professional and general ethics.
    16. To defend client/patient rights and interests.
    17. To document the process of art therapy according to the record-keeping requirements.
    18. To regularly participate in supervisions.
    19. To, recognize one’s professional limitations and possibilities within the professional competence.
    20. To systematically study current professional literature and professional periodicals.
    21. To use information technology, particularly to store, obtain and distribute information.
    22. To comply with occupational safety, fire safety and hygiene requirements.
    23. To know the official language.
    24. To know two foreign languages at a communication level.
    25. To use professional terminology in the official language and one foreign language.

  • Competences/ autonomy

    1. Ability to build therapeutic relationship with respect to client or patient needs and the scope of one’s activity.
    2. Ability to utilize artistic means and techniques according to one’s specialization and creative expression in art therapy.
    3. Ability to understand and use non-verbal communication.
    4. Ability to use a client or patient’s reflection on the creative process and its outcome.
    5. Ability to define the objectives of art therapy based on therapeutic interventions.
    6. Ability to create and maintain a safe therapeutic environment and therapeutic relationship.
    7. Ability to use imagery, symbolism and metaphors in art therapy.
    8. Ability to ensure a safe, correct and efficient client or patient-centred care in art therapy.
    9. Ability to use professional thinking, make reasonable conclusions in art therapy.
    10. Ability to be receiving, active, interactive and creative in the therapeutic relationship with a client or patient.
    11. Ability to observe professional ethics and respect the patient/client needs.
    12. Ability to plan, organize and manage tasks and prioritize them.
    13. Ability to carry out self-reflection.
    14. Ability to ensure compliance with the requirements of environmental and labour protection regulations.
    15. Ability to communicate in the official language and two foreign languages.
    16. Only for visual plastic art therapists – ability to competently use the range of art and art creation techniques and help a client/patient work with them, ability to conduct analysis of a client’s/patient’s work.
    17. Only for music therapists – ability to competently use music creation techniques and help a client/patient express themselves through music, ability to conduct analysis of a client’s/patient’s work.
    18. Only for dance and movement therapists – ability to competently use the range of dance and movement and help a client/patient express themselves thorough movement, ability to conduct analysis and observation of movement, ability to apply the concept of body and mind in practice.
    19. Only for drama therapists – ability to competently use the concept, technique of drama and the range of procedures (including games, activities, styles and structures).
