LQF covers stages of education starting from the basic education (level 1 – special basic education) to the highest education (level 8 – doctoral studies).

Level of professional qualification
Till 1 august 2022 in Latvia had a system of five professional qualifications levels (PQL, 1 – the lowest, 5 – the highest).

PQL system covers only professional qualifications (basic education, secondary and higher education stages).

PQL reflects readiness of a person to perform work of certain stage of complexity and responsibility.

Learning outcomes

Learning outcomes are knowledge, skills and competences acquired during a certain period of learning.

In Latvia, learning outcomes are stipulated by state education standards and occupational standards (for the professional qualifications).

Learning outcomes of higher education are defined by higher education institutions.

Knowledge (knowledge and comprehension):
– upon completion of the study programme the graduate demonstrates basic and in-depth knowledge characteristic of the field of science of music and of the profession of musicologist and has comprehensive knowledge in:
– development tendencies and regularities of professional music, development strategies and planning methods in the field of music, scientific research methods.

Furthermore, competencies in history of music, music theory, analysis of form of music, styles of music interpretation and methods of music theory subjects tuition correspond to the highest level of musicologist’s profession.
The graduates demonstrate understanding of the fundamental concepts and terminology used in the field of music pedagogy;
– of the significance of means of musical expression in the process of composing, and are able to evaluate interpretation of a piece of music and the technical and artistic level of the performance.

Skills (knowledge application skills, communication skills, general skills):
– as a result of studies, the graduate is able to independently and responsibly undertake the duties of a musicologist and a professional education music teacher – to apply his/her knowledge in the field of the musicology based on the main traditions and the latest discoveries;
– to explain the regularities in music development, to analyse and to evaluate music pieces of different epochs and styles, to run concert lectures, and demonstrate pieces of music or their sections, to preserve Latvian musical culture heritage;
– to cooperate with cultural and educational institutions, musicians, music collectives and their managers, choreographers and composers in order to facilitate integration of Latvian music into the culture life of the world, to organize and plan his/her own creative and research activities;
– to develop professional music education programmes, study programmes for music schools and secondary music schools, to evaluate and analyse skills and knowledge acquired by students during the process of studies, to explain methodology of learning, to compare interpretation of musical pieces, to define aims and tasks of the study course, to analytically approach information, problem issues and solutions in the fields of music and musicology;
– to explain various concepts of these fields and to discuss these concepts convincingly with professionals and non-professionals.

Graduate is able to independently manage his/her own and his/her student’s learning processes, to organize further self-education and professional development, to demonstrate scientific approach in problem solving processes;
– to assume responsibilities and initiatives in individual work, team work or whilst leading the work of other people, to make decisions and to find creative solutions in changing or uncertain circumstances.
Graduates can speak the official state language and at least two foreign languages, and have learned to comply with legal documents and regulations of work safety, fire safety and environmental safety.

Competencies (analysis, synthesis and evaluation):
– graduate is able to independently acquire, select, analyse and apply information within the fields of musicology and music pedagogy;
– to make decisions and to solve problems within the context of the musicologist’s profession, to demonstrate comprehension of the professional ethics of teacher;
– to evaluate the role of music within social environment and to participate in the development of the fields of professional music and culture education.

  • Skills

    1. To analyse, compare and assess compositions of different eras, styles and genres, composition structure, musical form and musical expression.
    2. To assess the technical and artistic level of a composition.
    3. To engage in journalism, music research, write annotations, criticism, reviews, give opinions.
    4. To be able to play at least one musical instrument.
    5. To conduct concert-lectures, prepare lectures.
    6. To use information search and selection means, utilize office equipment and information technologies.
    7. To use music terminology in the official language and at least two foreign languages.
    8. To collaborate with cultural and educational institutions, musicians, musical groups and their leaders, choreographers and composers.
    9. To perform work individually and in a team.
    10. To plan and manage teamwork.
    11. To systematically improve a musicologist’s professional qualification.
    12. To know the official language.
    13. To know at least two foreign languages at the communication level.
    14. To comply with labour protection, fire safety and hygiene requirements.
    15. To comply with environmental protection regulations.
    16. To meet the requirements of employment relationship.
    17. To comply with document management requirements and prepare documents accordingly.

  • Competences/ autonomy

    1. Ability to apply knowledge of musicology on the basis of both traditions and recent findings.
    2. Ability to explain the regularities of music development, musical creative processes.
    3. Ability to analyse and evaluate compositions of various eras and styles.
    4. Ability to conduct concert-lectures playing musical pieces or fragments of pieces on an instrument.
    5. Ability to conduct lectures, using the latest information technology.
    6. Ability to assess the musical interpretation of a composition, its technical and artistic level.
    7. Ability to engage in journalism, music research, write annotations, criticism, reviews, give opinions.
    8. Ability to preserve the cultural heritage of Latvian music.
    9. Ability to work with cultural and educational institutions, musicians, musical groups and their leaders, choreographers, composers, promoting the integration of Latvian music in the global cultural circulation.
    10. Ability to freely play at least one musical instrument.
    11. Ability to organize and plan one’s creative and research work.
    12. Ability to take responsibility and initiative through individual work, teamwork or managing other people’s work.
    13. Ability to adopt decisions and find solutions in changing and unclear conditions.
