Latvian Qualifications Framework (LQF) has 8 levels (1 – the lowest, 8 – the highest).

Levels reflect the complexity level of acquired knowledge, skills and competences (learning outcomes).

LQF covers stages of education starting from the basic education (level 1 – special basic education) to the highest education (level 8 – doctoral studies).

Level of professional qualification
Latvia has a system of five professional qualifications levels (PQL, 1 – the lowest, 5 – the highest).

PQL system covers only professional qualifications (basic education, secondary and higher education stages).

PQL reflects readiness of a person to perform work of certain stage of complexity and responsibility.

Learning outcomes

Learning outcomes are knowledge, skills and competences acquired during a certain period of learning.

In Latvia, learning outcomes are stipulated by state education standards and occupational standards (for the professional qualifications).

Learning outcomes of higher education are defined by higher education institutions.

Manicure and pedicure specialist

  • Knowledge

    1. The KNOWLEDGE at the level of notion:
    1.1. basics of business;

    2. The KNOWLEDGE at the level of understanding:

  • Skills

    1. To differentiate the health condition of hand and leg skin and nails, nail type and structure, to identify the changes in hand and leg skin and nails and give an advice to solve the customer’s problem at appropriate specialist – podiatrist or dermatologist.
    2. To select, prepare and use disinfectants, follow the usage instructions, clean, disinfect and sterilize instruments, tools and equipment.
    3. To select appropriate instruments, tools and equipment for the working process and appropriate professional hand and leg care products, follow the usage and storage instructions.
    4. To calculate and dose the amount of the necessary hand and leg care professional cosmetics.
    5. To recommend hand and leg care products to the customer for usage at home to keep the results of the procedure.
    6. To sculpt the nail shape by meeting the hand appearance and customer requirements.
    7. To use the basic technologies in the manicure and pedicure procedure (classical, dry treatment and SPA treatment technique).
    8. To use nail nippers or scissors when treating the cuticle area without harming the tissues.
    9. To polish the nails, know the polishing techniques and use different types of nail polishes.
    10. To carry out the nail design.
    11. To select and carry out the cosmetic massage procedures.
    12. To meet the requirements of of the labour protection, fire protection and electrical safety laws and regulations.
    13. To respect the consumer rights.
    14. To provide the first aid.
    15. To organize the working environment, carry out the epidemiological safety measures.
    16. To comply with the personal hygiene standards.
    17. To observe the environmental protection laws and regulations.
    18. To use personal protective equipment.
    18. To schedule and organize the work, take responsibility for the work results.
    20. To find, select and use the information and create documentation for ensuring working procedures.
    21. To flexibly solve the problematic issues.
    22. To be able to use the official language.
    23. To be able to use one foreign language at the communication level.
    24. To use the professional terminology in the official language and in one foreign language.
    25. To observe the standards of the legal employment relationship.
    26. To observe the principles of professional and general ethics.
    27. To use information technology for carrying out the professional activities.

  • Competences/ autonomy

    1. Ability to organize and clean the working environment according to the process to be carried out, schedule the sequencing of works of technological process by providing safe customer services during the time of all work processes.
    2. Ability to differentiate the hand and leg skin, nail health condition, assess their structure, select an appropriate working technology and professional cosmetics.
    3. Ability to select the appropriate tools and equipment, workwear and personal protective equipment for the work to be carried out.
    4. Ability to communicate and cooperate, create positive interaction, solve problematic situations flexibly.
    5. Ability to precisely select and use the disinfectants and sterilization apparatus according to the instructions and epidemiological safety requirements.
    6. Ability to follow the usage and storage instructions of the professional hand and leg care cosmetics.
    7. Ability to creatively carry out the manicure and pedicure procedures, as well as have a good knowledge about fashion tendencies when sculpting nails.
    8. Ability to choose and use different manicure and pedicure treatment technologies in order to treat healthy hand and leg skin and nails.
    9. Ability to carry out the manicure and pedicure procedure by using appropriate hand and leg care professional products, recommend appropriate hand and leg care products to the customers for usage at home.
    10. Ability to carry out the cosmetic hand and leg massage.
    11. Ability to follow the requirements of of the labour protection, electrical safety and fire protection laws and regulations in the working environment and react appropriately, choose and use safe working methods.
    12. Ability to observe the environmental protection requirements and carry out the work duties without harming the environment.
    13. Ability to improve qualification according to development of the field and labour-market demand by regularly studying the latest materials, instruments, technologies and working methods,
    14. Ability to communicate in the official language and one foreign language.
    15. Ability to follow the standards of the legal employment relationship.
    16. Ability to work independently and take responsibility for the results of the work.
    17. Ability to follow the principles of professional and general ethics.

Qualifications can be acquired in the framework of education programs or in the evaluation and recognition of non-formal knowledge, skills and competences acquired (in vocational education LKI Levels 2-4).

ECTS credit points
