Latvian Qualifications Framework (LQF) has 8 levels (1 – the lowest, 8 – the highest).

Levels reflect the complexity level of acquired knowledge, skills and competences (learning outcomes).

LQF covers stages of education starting from the basic education (level 1 – special basic education) to the highest education (level 8 – doctoral studies).

Level of professional qualification
Till 1 august 2022 in Latvia had a system of five professional qualifications levels (PQL, 1 – the lowest, 5 – the highest).

PQL system covers only professional qualifications (basic education, secondary and higher education stages).

PQL reflects readiness of a person to perform work of certain stage of complexity and responsibility.

Learning outcomes

Learning outcomes are knowledge, skills and competences acquired during a certain period of learning.

In Latvia, learning outcomes are stipulated by state education standards and occupational standards (for the professional qualifications).

Learning outcomes of higher education are defined by higher education institutions.

SPA specialist

  • Knowledge

    1. The KNOWLEDGE at the level of notion:
    1.1. types of commercial activity in the beauty sector;
    1.2. protection of consumer rights;
    1.3. basics of marketing;
    1.4. cell, tissue, their structure, functions;
    1.5. metabolism and energy exchange processes in the body;
    1.6. skin diseases, damage, division, characterization;
    1.7. role of nutrition in the regulation of life processes (basic nutrients, ballast substances, vitamins, SPA nutrition, SPA beverages, nutrition-linked diseases and disorders);
    1.8. undesirable side effects caused by cosmetic products.
    2. The KNOWLEDGE at the level of notion understanding:
    2.1. structure of the human body, morphology and physiology of organs and their systems (support, muscle, respiratory, digestive, urogenital, heart and blood circulation, endocrine system);
    2.2. general pathology, pathological reactions of the human body;
    2.3. impact of the external environment on the human body;
    2.4. morphology and physiology of microorganisms (bacteria, viruses, fungi, protozoa) and their role in the infection process;
    2.5. raw materials for manufacturing cosmetic products;
    2.6. active ingredients, effect and use of cosmetic products;
    2.7. history, basic principles, indications, contraindications of massage;
    2.8. colour education, psychological and physiological effect of colours;
    2.9. SPA concept:
    2.10. international SPA concepts;
    2.11. national SPA concepts;
    2.12. modern trends in the SPA sector;
    2.13. natural factors of relaxation and their impact on the human body;
    2.14. energetic structure of a human;
    3. The KNOWLEDGE at the level of use:
    3.1. implementation of SPA services in accordance with the multi-sensory effect theory (visual influence methods, sound influence methods, scent influence methods, tactile influence methods and taste influence methods);
    3.2. methodologies for cosmetic massage of the body;
    3.3. SPA massages;
    3.4.  body care SPA procedures for ensuring the client’s well-being.
    3.5. thermal effect in SPA procedures;
    3.6. water relaxation procedures (except Sharko shower and underwater massage);
    3.7. contraindications of SPA procedures;
    3.8. using of professional cosmetics, eco-cosmetics, phytotherapy and aroma therapy products during SPA procedures;
    3.9. aroma therapy products and their use during procedures;

  • Skills

    1. To plan and organize one’s work in accordance with the task.
    2. To develop a safe working environment and maintain a high level of hygiene in the working premises and auxiliary premises.
    3. To use cleaners and disinfectants.
    4. To disinfect surfaces and equipment.
    5. To disinfect hands.
    6. To observe  the basic principles of business etiquette and professional and general ethics.
    7. To choose and prepare appropriate equipment and devices in the working premises to perform tasks.
    8. To have a good knowledge of and use equipment for ensuring SPA service.
    9. To create a harmonious and relaxing SPA working environment.
    10. Ability to cooperate with the client.
    11. To document the results of a client survey.
    12. To formulate the desired results of a SPA procedure.
    13. To have a good knowledge of contraindications of SPA procedures.
    14. To assess the client’s skin condition in order to choose the appropriate products for SPA procedure (oils, creams, lotions, and other products).
    15. To recognize the side effects of cosmetic products, assess the effect of products applied during the procedure on the client’s skin.
    16. To choose and develop a client’s individual SPA procedure.
    17. Ability to develop and offer to clients SPA compositions, SPA programmes, and SPA complexes.
    18. To develop a client’s understanding of the basic principles of SPA, as well as the essence of SPA procedures and their effect on the body.
    19. To advise clients about how to maintain a condition of well-being.
    20. To maintain the client’s well-being during SPA procedures.
    21. To apply various techniques of SPA massage and perform a cosmetic body massage.
    22. To perform body care SPA procedures for ensuring the client’s well-being.
    23. To perform SPA water procedures to promote well-being (for example, relaxing and aroma baths).
    24. To apply thermal effect in SPA procedures (for example, a contrast of heat and cold).
    25. To perform SPA procedures, observing the multi-sensory effect theory, using visual influence methods, sound influence methods, scent influence methods, tactile, and taste influence methods.
    26. To use SPA professional cosmetics products, means and aids.
    27. To use transdermally applied aroma therapy products during SPA procedures.
    28. To use phytotherapy and eco-cosmetics products during SPA procedures.
    29. To perform risk assessment and documentation of SPA procedures.
    30. Ability to consult clients about using SPA professional cosmetics, eco-cosmetics, aroma therapy and phytotherapy products for skin care at home.
    31. To document the results of a client survey.
    32. To work without assistance,  assess the quality and assume responsibility for the result of the own work.
    33. To provide the first aid.
    34. To work individually and in a team and to cooperate with colleagues.
    35. To improve one’s professional knowledge and skills.
    36. To observe the requirements of the labour protection, fire safety, electrical safety, and environmental protection laws and regulations.
    37. To assess labour safety risks at the workplace, understand the restrictions of SPA procedures and risks (both real and potential) related to such restrictions.
    38. To know the official language.
    39. To know two foreign languages at the professional communication level.
    40. To use professional terminology in the official language and in two foreign languages.
    41. To observe the confidentiality of clients’ data and information.

  • Competences/ autonomy

    1. Ability to distinguish SPA procedures for provision of general well-being from procedures of therapeutic nature.
    2. Ability to understand the structure of the human body, functions of organs, and physiological functions of their systems.
    3. Ability to determine the client’s constitutional type and muscle tone.
    4. Ability to choose SPA procedures in cooperation with a client.
    5. Ability to develop and offer to clients SPA compositions, SPA programs and SPA complexes.
    6. Ability to inform and consult the client about the sequence of SPA procedures and their compatibility with other procedures.
    7. Ability to formulate and explain the desired results of a SPA procedure.
    8. Ability to choose and use appropriate work place equipment and devices.
    9. Ability to make a decision about the works to be performed, their sequence, the most suitable means, technologies and materials.
    10. Ability to assess the client’s psycho-emotional condition and to document it.
    11. Ability to perform body care procedures (cosmetic body massage, SPA water procedures, apply various techniques of a SPA massage).
    12. Ability to perform SPA procedures according to the multi-sensory effect theory.
    13. Ability to create a harmonious and relaxing SPA working environment.
    14. Ability to establish cooperation with the client.
    15. Ability to determine the client’s individual colouring.
    16. Ability to maintain a positive, trustful psycho-emotional micro-climate at the workplace.
    17. Ability to apply SPA professional cosmetics, eco-cosmetics, aroma therapy, and phytotherapy products in procedures.
    18. Ability to consult clients about using SPA professional cosmetics, eco-cosmetics, aroma therapy and phytotherapy products for skin care at home.
    19. Ability to document and analyse the results of a client survey.
    20. Ability to work without assistance and in a team and cooperate with colleagues.
    21. Ability to improve one’s professional knowledge and skills.
    22. Ability to perform the work duties without causing harm to one’s own health and the health of clients and colleagues.
    23. Ability to observe the requirements of the labour  and environmental protection laws and regulations.
    24. Ability to observe the standards of the legal employment relations.

Qualifications can be acquired in the framework of education programs or in the evaluation and recognition of non-formal knowledge, skills and competences acquired (in vocational education LKI Levels 2-4).
