– to acquire knowledge of most important acts of legislation on the subject of operations of insurance companies and Latvian financial system;
– to gain theoretical knowledge on the framework and development of financial system, operations of financial market and insurance companies;
– to master practical skills in conducting operations of insurance companies, evaluating and managing financial risks, financial accounting and financial analysis of enterprises and insurance companies;
– to acquire practical skills in application of statistical and mathematical methods in finance;
– to gain practical skills in practical placement at a financial institution (26 credits);
– to know how to solve topical economic problems, conduct independent research in the field of insurance and finance, the result of which must be presented in bachelor’s paper (12 credits).

The aim of the Professional Bachelor’s study program Insurance and Finance is to provide the professional higher education studies, wherein the mastering of basic theoretical principles is carried out integrally with practical application thereof, and to train for the financial system competent specialists, competitive in changing social and economic conditions, possessing deepened knowledge in insurance and research skills, ability and wish to independently acquire new knowledge and follow up the education.

To achieve the aim of the study program, the following tasks are set forward:
– to realise such study program of which content would ensure the mastering of theoretical and practical knowledge and skills corresponding to the fifth level of professional qualification;
– to develop in students the modern general competences demanded on the market of labour;
– to provide students with all-round knowledge and understanding of structure and development of financial system, transaction on financial markets, activity of insurance companies;
– promote the acquisition of practical skills in performance of insurance companies’ operations, evaluation and management of financial risks, financial accounting and financial analysis of enterprises and insurance companies;
– promote the acquisition of practical skills in the use of statistical and mathematical methods in finance;
– promote the analytical abilities of students, develop their skills in putting forward the  professional problems and in solution of tasks associated therewith;
– develop students’ ability and skills in scientific research, creative work and chosen professional activity;
– provide graduates with necessary skills for follow-up education.

Intellectual competences:
– students shall be able to strategically and analytically formulate the professional aspects and problems of financial industry;
– with the use of acquired basic theory and skills to solve professional problems and structure own follow-up education;
– promote own follow-up education and perfection of professional qualification;
– discuss on topical events on financial market.

Academic competences:
– students shall be able to assess and use in their professional field the statistical methods and practical approaches to solution of financial problems;
– to acquire, select and process information;
– to use latest research studies and achievements in financial industry in their practical work;
– carry out creative, research and educating work in the fields of financial and insurance.

Practical competences:
– students shall be able to apply the acquired theoretical knowledge and practical skills in accounting, solution of financial problems and risk management;
– to apply statistical and mathematical methods in finance; to interpret statistical data;
– make and substantiate decision within the professional competence;
– to identify insurance premiums in risk evaluation and subscription;
– to carry out analysis of entrepreneurial activity;
– to work both independently and in a team; to develop and implement projects; to be communicative.
